About PETBrain

My firm PrePost (http://www.studioprepost.com) has received a grant through the Kenneth Rainan Foundation (http://krfoundation.org/) to study the feasability of making building materials out of plastic bottles. The project is called "PETBrain". The Buckminster Fuller Institute is administering the grant and we're publishing it via their "Prototype" program (http://www.bfi.org/programs/prototype). It's an exciting grant and partners and we're happy to get this chance to do this kind of material research.

We want to involve you in the research. We're looking specifically at how 2 Liter plastic bottles can be reformed by blow molding them into brick forms. We have it on good authority from bottle manufacturers that it's possible but the timing and temperature need to be spot on. So, that's one part: figuring out a kind of post-consumer manufacturing process that can make a viable brick. The second part is designing a pavilion scale building that could be made from those bricks. Part three is researching the issues surrounding PET plastic bottles in general. The goal is a design/build of a plastic bottle pavillion whose purpose is to provide a space for education and discussion on plastic. This is a non-credit, non-paying project. However, anyone who is involved will get credited and published on the bfi.org site and studioprepost.com
